Narratives with Integrity: Building a Trauma-Informed Storytelling Practice Over Summer Ahead
“What does meaningful consent really look like?”
“How can we protect someone’s privacy and still tell a strong story?”
“How do we protect the audience receiving the story?”
These are just some of the common questions we see about trauma-informed storytelling, but we want to answer YOUR specific questions for this upcoming panel discussion.
Stories can move people to action. But behind every compelling narrative is a real person, and for many of the communities nonprofits serve, that person has experienced trauma. When organizations don’t account for this, even well-intentioned storytelling can cause harm, sometimes without anyone realizing it.
In this summer installment of Narratives With Integrity, we’re going deeper. Building on the ethical foundations explored in our earlier sessions, we’ll focus on what it means to develop a trauma-informed storytelling practice, one that centers the safety, agency, and long-term wellbeing of every person involved in the storytelling process.
Led by MemoryFox CEO/Founder Chris Miano, alongside a panel of thought leaders, we’ll address the questions from our attendees and also cover:
- What meaningful consent, readiness, and power dynamics look like in trauma-informed story gathering
- Ways to protect privacy and safety while still sharing authentic, impactful stories
- How to tell dignified fundraising stories without relying on pity, trauma, or oversimplified transformation arcs
- How to build organizational policies and practices that protect story owners and audiences
- Ways to build resiliency when bearing witness to painful stories.
Whether you’re new to the Narratives With Integrity series or a returning participant, this session will give you concrete tools to show up for your storytellers and your community with greater intention this summer and beyond.
