Narratives With Integrity: Ethical Storytelling for Beginners
This event took place on March 11, 2026. You can access the recording below.
“How can we share stories that inspire change without making people feel like their story is the price of help?”
“How do we ensure storytellers feel empowered, not pressured, to say yes?”
“Is it ever appropriate—or necessary—to compensate people for sharing their experiences?”
Storytelling is a powerful tool for nonprofits. The right story can build trust, spark generosity, and create meaningful impact. But when done carelessly, it can unintentionally reinforce power imbalances between organizations and the communities they serve.
In this beginner-friendly installment of Narratives With Integrity, we explored the fundamentals of ethical storytelling: how to approach, collect, and share stories in ways that prioritize respect, consent, and agency. You’ll learn how to ensure stories are offered, not owed, and how to engage storytellers with integrity from start to finish.
Led by MemoryFox CEO/Founder Chris Miano, with a panel of thought leaders, we discussed:
- How to recognize and navigate power dynamics in story collection
- Ethical ways to compensate or honor storytellers
- How to foster consent and agency throughout the storytelling process
- Practical strategies to move from transactional to trust-based storytelling
This session is perfect for nonprofit staff, volunteers, and storytellers eager to create meaningful impact without compromising ethics or dignity.
